Summary
Description In November 2010, the Community that used to be at Burford Priory moved to Mucknell Abbey, a new eco-monastery near Worcester. The monastery has a number of sustainable features: wood chip boiler, solar thermal panels, solar photovoltaics, rainwater harvesting, biodigester, organic kitchen garden and orchard. I assisted in the move, and in learning how to operate and maintain the technologies. I set up a spreadsheet to collect and analyse data on solar generation and electricity, heat and water consumption. I wrote a series of factsheets on the technologies and estate for the Community and other interested parties. These I have published on the Community's website, along with further information on the vision for sustainability and the prayer and worship which underpin the sustainable action, and an article about the role of religious communities in combating climate change. I also wrote briefing notes for the Community about managing the utilities and other building services. Living alongside the Community also meant following the full monastic timetable: the divine office, and the times for work, prayer and study. My main work was in establishing the kitchen garden and working on the 40 acres estate. Between September 2010 and April 2011, I wrote a daily blog about "things that I have seen and things that have interested me" with "a flavour of sustainability". In being attentive and getting to know the 40 acres, I took a number of photos which I made into a series of photo cards for sale (advert!). Finally, I gave several tours to visiting groups, and made links with local Transition initiatives and other local groups involved in sustainability. Also...At the end of October 2011, I ran a session on renewable energy for the Community of the Sisters of the Church, at their annual Chapter meeting held at Ham Common, London. |
